Carcassonne - France (A must see)

We have been to Carcassonne several times and how can I not blog about it. Haha. Carcassonne is in Aude, Languedoc-Roussillon. It is an outstanding example of a medieval fortified town, encircling the castle and surrounding buildings, and cathedral. I am not able to take a good photo of the whole of the castle and its city. However, you can go to this google link to view photos taken by other people. https://www.google.co.jp/search?q=carcassonne&rlz=1T4BFLR_enSG473SG494&biw=1138&bih=534&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwict8eUsqjNAhWF6xoKHXljAz4Q_AUIBigB#

You can walk around the castle and it's free. However, if you want to see more of the history, etc, you have to pay an entrance fee. I would say that it is quite worth it to go in but once for me is enough. Other than that, you are still free to roam around the town and the castle where there are many shops and eateries. We always love visiting the souvenir shops where they sell a lot of knights swords, helmets and also princesses' gowns. At any of the eateries, we usually ordered crepes filled with nutella and whipped cream. Yum yum. There are also a lot of fine dining restaurants and the food are reasonably price.

Stacy was standing under a bridge, which to me, look like the casle's little garden

Be prepared for some walks

Magnificent view of the city

Another view
Next, we went into the cathedral and was so amaze by the decorations and the serenity inside. I am not a Christian or Catholic but I am always open to visit the cathedral because then nobody judge me whenever, I am in there.
Inside the cathedral. The stained glass is so beautiful. Awww..
When we were about to leave the castle, we saw horse ride outside and we thought it was a wonderful experience to go around the castle while sitting inside the carriage. Please be aware that the guide / staff only speak French. while I was sitting in the carriage, something that the guide did, that made me regret to take the horse ride. He was a bit impatient with the horses and was saying something angrily to them. Example, when one of the horses bent its head down to touch the ground, the guide yanked his head up. I don't understand why he did it. But it just made me felt that he was not kind to the horses and only making use of them for monetary gain. sad.
Taking photo with the horses

Sitting in the horse's carriage

After the horse ride, which lasted for about 20mins, I saw a petite train ride just outside the castle. I think it goes around the outside of the castle. sigh... I should have taken this train ride instead. At least I don't feel so guilty after the horse ride incident.

Overall, going to Carcassonne is always an enjoyment for the kids. So many things to see and eat, and also the walking tired them out, which is what we want. Haha!

Lastly, a family photo for sweet memory

The beggars in France

Today I took Erica to Lidl (supermarket) to get my groceries and sitting outside Lidl was a man begging for money. He don't look French to me, more like from middle-eastern country. He greeted me "Bonjour!" And asked me to give him a piece of coin.

Now, I am a very soft-hearted and you would say a generous person. If I can help and it is within my means, I will try my best to help that person. I am definitely not rich. If I only have $2, I give that poor soul $1.

I didn't give the beggar any money (I didn't have any money with me, except my debit card). I went into Lidl, bought 2 croissants and other groceries that I needed, went outside and gave him the croissants. I guess he didn't expect anyone to buy him food. Usually people will just gave him a coin.

My husband will always scold me for always giving things or donating money when we didn't even have enough. Well, that's me. Everyday, I count my blessings and thought about some people who are less fortunate than me. Anyway, my husband and my friends did remind me that these beggars do have help from the govt. e.g shelters, money and medical benefits. And that begging is an easy way to get money, instead of working. Personally, I think it may be a little difficult for some of them to get a job as some of them are migrants.

Beggars in France, I noticed, consist of the French people, the young people and the old people. They are everywhere. On the streets, outside supermarkets, traffic lights junctions, etc. Sometimes, I wonder why they beg when they are French, I mean, don't their government help them in some ways?I am very naive, right? These young beggars, they look fit and healthy to me. Why beg? Aren't they suppose to be in school? There was one time I saw an old women holding a sleeping child and begging on the street! I cannot bear to see this, especially when it involve children and this one was sleeping?! I had a feeling the child was drugged. Few days later, I went back to that street again as I couldn't rest my mind. The old woman with the sleeping child was gone. I went by a few times the next few weeks, still no sign. Phew.. I guess the authority must have intervened.

When I first came to France, I like to go by this small supermarket to get my grocery. Outside the supermarket, there was this man, I think he is French, who begged for money. He looked strong, tall and healthy to me, except for his long unkept hair. And whenever I walked past him, I will gave him some coins. One day, as usual, I walked past him and saw him talking to an old man. That old man look like he was counseling or advising him something. Few weeks later, I did not see the beggar again. Later on, I did see him again. He has cut his hair short and he seem to be walking somewhere. He was not begging anymore. Actually, I was kind of happy. Maybe he found a job or maybe he found hope. Maybe He found life again.

I look at Singapore, my home country, and we are truly fortunate and blessed.

Time to 'clear' friends in my life

While in France, I chatted with some friends through messages. Some of the friends who I chatted with were from Secondary school, Polytechnic days and ex-colleagues. There are a number of them who I would say we rekindle through these chats after not talking for many years. I 'rediscovered' true friendships. whenever, I am back in Singapore, I will make time to meet them. But a handful of them had me thinking what had happened to them; especially their attitude towards other people.

In December, I chatted with this friend (let's call her AL), who was my ex schoolmate. After talking to her for a while, I thought maybe it will be a great idea to meet up when I am back in April with the rest of our friends. So from the help of another friend, we set up a chat group in Whatsapp. Many people were added in. We decided to fix a date and time for our gathering. Honestly, not many were interested or I would say that others have their commitments as the gathering was on a weekday at high tea hours (the date and time was suggested by AL). Fair enough. I do not like large group of people, as I find it difficult to communicate anyway.

AL said that she preferred a weekday citing weekends was for her extended family. She said she will take leave for this day and requested to do a high-tea. Now, high-tea hours is 3pm to 5pm usually. So a lot of people will not be able to make it because it was still working hours. In the end, 4 of us said we were free.

The day arrived, 3 of us met at this high-tea place at 3pm and we were missing of AL. Worried, we messaged her. At about 4.30pm, she replied and said she had work commitment at the last minute and couldn't make it. Now, I thought why couldn't she inform us earlier if she couldn't make it? why waited until we have to ask her about it. ok, fine. I like to give people chance, so I thought I will asked her later. Maybe she truly forgot about the meeting or she was having some problems at work.

I went back to France. No message from AL. In May, I decided to message her (you never know if this people are in trouble). Days later, she finally replied.

She said "Work commitment lor.. company facing restructuring and merger.. a lot of work.. cannot go off after lunch..sigh."

No apologies from her or even asking how was everything. Damn it.

I replied "Hmm... thought you are taking leave to meet us that day and after that you never reply us you not coming. So we got worried. Anyway, good to know you are ok."

She replied a moment later, "I actually took leave that afternoon but got to cancel it due to urgent issues. HR is tough job... really...lol"

Ya, right. So why couldn't you at least message us about it but you have to wait for us to ask you what happened? We are all adults, come on. And she has the cheek to say her job is so tough and even think it was funny to stood someone up. Grow up, please. Everybody's job are tough. Too arrogant eh?

Have you ever meet this kind of people who is the first to suggest to meet on this date and this time but never show up. Worse, she seems to be Missing In Action (MIA).

Till today, there is no reply from her. I'm so nice, I still give chance to her. haha.
Well, its time to 'remove' her from my friends list, she is simply too arrogant for me to handle. she doesn't appreciate other people's time and friendship. I wish her good luck. And hope karma won't comeback and bite her in the ass.
p.s. Recently, she is going to teach people about leadership. I'm not a stalker eh, her photos and profiles were all over my Facebook newsfeed selling her leadership workshops to people. Leadership in teaching people to be arrogant? or stood people up?

Indoor playground - Rigolus Park (closed)

Rigolus Park is our 2nd favourite indoor playground (the first is Royal Kids). Unlike Royal Kids, Rigolus Park is all about huge bouncy castles! Once in a while, they will even change the bouncy castles so there are always a varieties. What you see this month, may be different 2-3 months later. During summer, they will open up their garden for outdoor play with water fun! OMG! So the children get to enjoy indoor play as well as outdoor. Awesome!
Mummy, look at us! Sofa!
They also host companies bonding session. So companies who are spontaneous can go check it out! I saw a video on some companies events on their website and it look fun.

They organize birthday parties, parents get to have free wifi services. The only thing lacking, is their food menu. Not really a lot of choices except if you don't mind waffles and crepes. And the usual coffee, soft drinks and ice-cream.

They have a spacious big carpark which is very good for school bus to park there. The entrance fee is cheap compare to other indoor play at 11euro for unlimited play.

For some parents who prefer to sit at the tables, they might not like it as certain play areas are obstructed so they can't see where their children. But I'm fine with it, as I prefer to follow my kids in case they get push, they fall down or get struck. Overall, I will bring my kids there as much as possible. I just have to make sure I will plan it in a way it is not too near their meal time in case, I have to find food for them.

Trampoline - great way to tire the kids!

Indoor Playgrounds in Toulouse, France - Royal kids

*updated: new trampolines!

The kids have been begging me to go indoor playground, I finally said 'yes'. Royalkids has added a new trampoline area and that kind of filled up all the empty spaces in there.  Yipee!

There is also an interactive game in the disco room now, where the kids can dance and pop the balloons at the same time. Hooray!

My kids favorite indoor playground is Royal kids. I love to go there too. Why? Because I can get to play too. Haha! Kidou Recre at do not allow adults at the play areas and they are very strict about it. There was one time a man went up the play area to help his toddler but the staff announced on the microphone that he is not allowed in there. I can imagine how embarrassing it was for him as everyone turned to look at him. But then, the toddler need help, right? What to do? The poor father just watched his toddler cried up there. So silly of the staff.

Royal kids is one big jungle gym and you get to climb with your children if they need help. Or if you just want to do some workout. ;) There is also cars driving section (you need to buy token from the staff), and you can ride with your child. And another section for arcades playing (they recently add initial D car racing). There is a giant lego section, a soccer area and a disco section. Woohoo!

For the adults, there is a free wifi corner to surf your internet and magazines corner (in French only). The Cafe I thought serve reasonably good food. Example burgers, fries, waffles, crepes, nuggets, pizza, etc. My kids always love their kids menu which consist of nuggets and fries, caprisun drink, apple purée and a free token for the car ride. And I always order the waffles and burgers. Yummy!

They also organise birthday parties with different packages. I think one of the packages include royal kids' mascot. It's a cute dragon. ;)

Giant lego!

My exercise regime - weights lifting

This year has been a wee healthier one for me. At the start of the year, my husband decided to buy a box of weights (I think its 40kg in total) for us to train our arms muscles. *flexing one arm while typing. Keke

I used to do push-ups and dips but I wanted to be even better and I hope to see some 'tiny' muscles on my arms. I started by using 2kg weights in each hand for about a month. And then I go up to 3kg for 2 weeks and now I am at 4kg weights. Sometimes, I tried to go up to 5kg (can be an agony).

My friends used to tell me the following when They know I'm lifting weights:
1. Why do you want to see muscles?
2. Too much and you won't look good wearing sleeveless clothes, you know.
3. See, your weight didn't decrease because muscles weigh more
4. Where do you get the time to do exercise?

I said:
1. Some muscles go well with me :D
2. In fact, I look so much better than having it flabby. Imagine waving to a friend *flabbergast
3. Means I must having lost weights since I weigh the same?
4. I do my exercise TOGETHER with my children. Or during my little girl' naptime or at night when they are sleeping.

Of course, all exercises seem to give you some sort of pains but it shouldn't to a point that it injure you. I do it at my own pace and once in awhile push a little harder. I search the internet to find various trainers teaching the right way to lift weights and I also do cardio exercises at home and outdoor jogging once a week.

During my first year in France, I seem to keep getting sick.  In my best records when I'm in working in Singapore, I can be free of any illness for 2 years. So I really cannot understand the reasons for falling sick all the time. As my husband and I are the only people taking caring of the children and each other, we really need to be healthy.

For this Paris trip, my arm muscles seem prominent but it's not like this when I'm am not carrying heavy thing (Erica)
